  4.     President Bush's attempt to appoint William Lucas as Assistant
  5. Attorney General for Civil Rights was misguided (NATION, Aug. 14).
  6. As a black American, I find it deeply insulting that someone who
  7. has never tried a case or written a brief should be nominated for
  8. such a pivotal post. It is not enough to be black; the candidate
  9. should be the best-qualified person to be found.

  14.     Shame on you for running down Lucas, who not only graduated
  15. from law school but who also has had a long career in the field of
  16. law enforcement as a police officer, an FBI agent and a sheriff.
  17. Have you forgotten that Chief Justice Earl Warren never sat as a
  18. judge on any bench before he joined the U.S. Supreme Court?
